Despite the increasing popularity of online networking, meeting people face to face still is critical to getting a new job or client, according to John Boyd, founder.
That's why two years ago, the Ridgefield resident created what became known in June 2008 as www.meetingwave.com, a Web site that people can use to set up in-person meetings.
"With the Internet and job closings, we are more detached from each other more than ever," said Boyd, who thought of the idea as a patent lawyer in Manhattan, where networking was highly encouraged. "We're trying to make it very easy for people to make real-world connections, wherever they are."
"MeetingWave is great in that it is focusing on face-to-face networking," said Tina Marquis (Director of Marketing), noting that other networking sites stop at getting people together online. MeetingWave also allows users to zero in on the type of people they want to meet by allowing them to say who they are looking for and for what purpose, Marquis said."Other sites don't have that type of pre-screening," she said. "It's not what you know; it's who you know."
Sites such as MeetingWave have great potential in helping like-minded professionals get together, said Ed Fitzgerald, a meeting coordinator for Westport-based Former IBMers Networking for Entrepreneurship.
"I certainly believe in connecting online, which can result in people getting together in real life," he said.
MeetingWave has served as the "backbone" for his face-to-face networking group called "Coffee With Ian," said Ian Isanberg, of Queens, N.Y.
"Over the past two years, I have met many people, once strangers, over coffee," he said. "MeetingWave has been very helpful, not only to facilitate these meetings, but also to open feedback."
